Bamiyan Buddha

This sculpture is inspired from the Buddhas of Bamyan (in Afghanistan), more than 150 feet tall, which were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. The head of Buddha ia made by fusing terracotta with brass. The head is placed on a piece of driftwood, and the standing Buddha is made using the Rock Dhokra technique. The small elephants on the side show the scale of the actual sculptures which inspired this piece.

About the Technique: Rock Dhokra and Fusion Dhokra are both experiments with the traditional Dhokra process. Rock Dhokra is our patented process of fusing stone and brass using the lost wax technique of metal casting. This fusion with stone had never happened in the 5000-year old history of metal art. At Devrai, we have done this after excessive research and experimentation with various types of stones.
Fusion Dhokra is the process of fusing brass with a wide range of materials like terracotta, ceramic, iron, copper, solidified molten earth etc. using the lost wax technique of metal casting.
