Spirit of the Forest

Becoming the voice of silent nature through the medium of art is one of our guiding forces at Devrai. This sculpture shows the spirit of the forest being burned during Vanva (man-made forest fires in the Western ghats), and all the life going up in smoke. But the small butterfly in the midst of the fire stands as a symbol of hope.
The defining feature of this piece is the driftwood piece, which is painted with flames. The Forest Spirit is made in brass using the Dhokra casting method.

Materials: Brass, Wood
Dimensions (cm): 24 x 20 x 62

About the Technique: Dhokra is an ancient form of metal art, also known as lost wax casting. The sculpture is made in wax first, a mould is made around it, and during casting the wax is replaced by brass, thus the name ‘lost wax casting’.
